All about the Hampta Pass Trek

Hampta Pass is one of the ancient trade routes that connected Spiti with the region of Kullu. This route was used by all the greatest explorers of the Himalayas to reach Spiti Valley in the ancient times.

Hampta pass is one of the most beautiful crossover treks that start from the Pine forests of Chika and end at the meadows of Chatru. A perfect beginner trek for someone who is looking to explore the Himalayas for the first time.

SPECIAL NOTES:
This is a high altitude trek. We would be crossing high passes above 15000ft and it takes us through remote regions where professional medical help may not be available. We would advise you to carry a comprehensive medical first-aid kit advised by a doctor. It would also be advisable to speak to your doctor in case of any health problems that you may have, before you undertake this trip.

We do not recommend this trip to people with people with blood pressure or cardiac problems.

Delays are expected on account of roadblock & weather conditions. Our effort will be to continue with the trip as per the schedule & make you as comfortable as possible. But in such situations we may have to compromise on the campsite / hotels & adjust to these situations then & there.

The itinerary should be viewed as ideal & we may have to make some spot changes due various reasons.

  1. Day 1Manali to Jobra to Chika 2900mt 5 H

    We pick you up from your Hotel in Manali and drive to Jobra, the starting point of the trek. We take the narrow trail that leads to the forest of pine trees. A variety of trees like maple, deodar, toss, and oak can also be spotted on this trail. We continue to climb along the easy gradient till we see a clearing. From here one can a vast meadow across the Rani Nullah. This meadow is Chika our camping site for the night.

  2. Day 2Chika – Balu Ka Gera 3300mt 5 H

    Today’s trek passes through some spectacular landscape and includes 2 river crossings. The trail stays on the true right of the stream ascending initially over the boulders. The meadows above consists vast number of flowers rivalling the beauty ofValley of Flowers. As we get closer to Balu Ka Ghera the green trail turns into rock strewn landscape. The impressive grandeur of immediate surroundings, the nearness of the Tokru-Shakru peaks, the wonderful colouring of the rocks and mountainside, all make this one of the best campsite on the route.

  3. Day 3Balu ka Ghera - Shea Goru via Hampta Pass 4270 mt 7 H

    The most important day of the trek begins earlier than usual to ensure we reach the next camp in the best weather available. The trail now ascends towards Hamta Pass, a steady climb till we reach the pass. One can have close views of Deo Tibba and Indrasan peaks along the route. At the pass we stop for small celebration and lots of photographs. From here it is a descent all the way right to the campsite at Shea Goru. "Shea Goru" means a very cold place because of its adjacency to a glacier. During summer, it's a grazing pasture or halting place for the shepherds on the way to the Lahaul valley.

  4. Day 4Shea Goru - Chatru 3360 mt 3 hrs

    The fourth day's trek is a descent all the way down to Chatru. The river has to be forded at one point from where one can see the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti. The massive mountains of the Pir Panjal and ChandraBhaga ranges dominate the entire landscape till the campsite at Chhatru. Chhatru is a confluence point of paths from Rohtang Pass, Hamta Pass and Spiti. From here we board our taxis and drive to Chandratal 3 hrs away. Enjoy the beautiful views of this high altitude lake surrounded by the ChandraBhaga Peaks. We return back to Chatru for our overnight camp.

  5. Day 5Chhatru – Manali (Drive)

    After the most memorable 5 days in the Himalayas we drive back to Manali over Rohtang Pass carrying rucksack full of wonderful memories and great friendships.
